Skills for Life in the East Midlands

English, Maths and ESOL classes are offered by the WEA throughout the East Midlands.

Classes are open to all adults over 19 who would like to improve these skills and may wish to work towards a qualification.

English classes cover:

  •  reading  – improving comprehension, summarising, study and research skills, reading for pleasure
  • writing skills – improving punctuation, grammar, essay writing, creative writing
  •  spelling – spelling rules, phonics, strategies for remembering difficult spellings
  •  communication skills – speaking and listening to develop confidence and opportunities

Maths classes cover:

  • using number – addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio
  • shape, space and measure – measurements, area, perimeter, volume, capacity, properties of shapes
  • handing data – drawing and interpreting data on tables, averages
  • practical problem solving

ESOL classes cover:

  • speaking – improving fluency, vocabulary and pronunciation in the English language
  • listening – improving understanding of the spoken English language
  • writing – sentence structure, grammar, punctuation and spelling
  • reading – reading for meaning  and for pleasure
